MCHISRS README Model Clearinghouse Information Storage and Retrieval System The Model Clearinghouse Information Storage and Retrieval System (MCHISRS) is an electronic data base system that was designed to help the Model Clearinghouse manage information about referrals from the EPA Regional Offices involving the interpretation of modeling guidance for specific regulatory applications. The MCHISRS consists of 1) approximately 1400 records of correspondence and conversations between the Clearinghouse and the Regional Offices and 2) a software program that allows the user to access the data base, in a search and retrieve mode, in order to relate historical cases to a contemporary model application. While the system was designed to only assist EPA internally, we believe that it may be useful to the States and private sector modelers to know something about the history of applications, perhaps similar to one they are working on. Thus we are making the software and database available for all use. CAUTIONARY NOTE: The information contained in the data base has not undergone any extensive checking regarding accuracy or completeness. Many of the records involve notes on verbal conversations between the Clearinghouse and the Regional Offices. As such, they may not accurately reflect what either party intended to say. The availability of this information does not obviate the need for early contact with the Regional Office regarding the applicability of historical information to a current model application. ********INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS********* MCHISRS is a DOS based program and must be run in DOS. Prior to downloading, go to the C drive in DOS and create a subdirectory named MCHISRS. Download the file, MCHISRS, into this subdirectory. After the file is downloaded, copy PKUNZIP to the MCHISRS subdirectory, change to the MCHISRS subdirectory and type: PKUNZIP.EXE -D MCHISRS.ZIP The result of the unzipping process will be to place all of the necessary files for the MCHISRS system into the MCHISRS subdirectory. The system is now ready for execution. To operate the system type: MCHISRS.EXE If one so desires, a Windows shortcut can be created using the target of: c:\mchisrs\mchisrs.exe This will allow the system to be run from Windows. ********PASSWORD ENTRY TO SYSTEM********* The password to enter the system is the word "mutual". This password permits the user to run MCHISRS in a "search and retrieve" mode only. The other modes of MCHISRS, which are reserved for EPA, are for data input and certain utility functions. ********USER MANUAL************************* Also available for download is the MCHISRS User's Manual. Before downloaing this file, it is suggested that you create a separate directory for it, perhaps a subdirectory under MCHISRS entitled MCUSEMAN. Then download the zipped user's manual file to MCUSEMAN directory, copy PKUNZIP into that directory and then type: PKUNZIP.EXE MCHUMAN.ZIP This will extract several files, the essence of which are the user's manual as one file (mstr2doc.wpd), and all the various parts of the user's manual as separate files. For purposes of search and retrieve, you really only need the title page, the preface, the table of contents and chapters 1 and 2. It is suggested that these be printed and put together as a hard copy manual. There are approximately 20 pages up through chapter 2.
