26 June 2009 A. Introduction -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This readme file documents the SMOKE data used for the EPA's v4 emissions modeling platform, based on the 2005v2 National Emissions Inventory (NEI) and also called the 2005 CAP-BAFM platform. This platform contains all inventory CAPs and HAPs emissions; however, we used a chemical mechanism that utilizes only "BAFM" VOC HAPs: Benzene, Acetaldehyde, Formaldehyde, and Methanol (CAS numbers 71432, 75070, 50000, and 67561 respectively). We also process Mercury, HCl and Chlorine emissions. This limited use of the HAP emissions shall hereafter be referred to as the "2005 CAP-BAFM" platform. This platform supports two types of 2005 runs. EPA's 2005ak_05b case is used for model performance evaluation and contains 2005-specific daily fires and uses hourly continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) data for the EGUs. The 2005ck_05b case (note the "c" instead of the "a" in the name) is used as the 2005 baseline for evaluation of future-year control strategies, the results from which are used in calculations of relative response factors (RRFs) during air quality modeling results analysis. The release deviates from the data used for both 2005ak_05b and 2005ck_05b because it does not include the MOVES-based onroad gasoline inventories used originally in these cases. Using these data require additional tools that EPA is not yet ready to release. Release of these data and tools will be made as soon as possible. Instead, we provide the NMIM-based 2005v2 inventories for gasoline onroad sources, as well as the rest of the mobile sources. We are providing only the SMOKE input ORL inventories, list files, and ancillary data at this time. SMOKE scripts will be provided later in the summer 2009. At this time, only the 2005 data associated with this platform are available. B. Disclaimer --------------------------------------------------------- This readme file is in progress. It is not intended to be complete documentation for the 2005 CAP-BAFM platform. EPA has not processed a full multipollutant (i.e., with all CMAQ-supported HAPs, also called CAP-HAP) case for 2005, so the latest available CAP-HAP case remains 2002. All of the HAP inventory data are provided in these files, but the ancillary files (such as the INVTABLE) would need to be modified to run with the full set of HAPs. EPA continues to work on its CAP-HAP modeling platform; therefore, future changes are possible. EPA reserves the right to update these data or create new versions of the CAP-HAP platform (or its components) without notice; however, we plan to update this site with current information whenever possible. C. Special Notes --------------------------------------------------------- The emissions provided do not match any of EPA's SMOKE runs exactly, because the onroad emissions are from a older case called "2005ah_tox_05b". These data are based entirely based on NMIM rather than based on MOVES for gasoline onroad mobile. In addition, several other emissions modeling sectors are unchanged from the 2005ah_tox_05b case, and so that is where they appear in the inventory directory structures and example SMOKE input "list" files. In addition, the speciation cross-reference files provided are not suitable for future-year modeling. In particular, they have components that are specific to 2002 and 2005 for mobile sources, because they assume certain fuel mixtures and vehicle type mixtures (penetration of Tier2 vehicles). Additional files will be provided for 2012, 2020 and other years at a later date. The EPA CHIEF website is the main web site used for accessing SMOKE-ready inventories and associated inputs: http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/ The emission inventories and SMOKE list files are provided in the following directory: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/ The updated ancillary data are available separately from the zip files provided for the platform. The "latest and greatest" ancillary data is available at: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/ancillary_smoke/ These data will be updated regularly as changes are made to EPA's working files. In addition, newer versions of ancillary files created by EPA (if they exist) can be found at: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/emch_latest_ancillary/smoke_format/ D. Zip files and data files needed for each case ----------------------------------------------------------- As a user, it may be necessary to know how to group the inventory files in SMOKE input "list" files used by the Smkinven program for the 2005ck_05b, 2005ak_05b, and 2005ah_tox_05b cases. This is particularly important for users who want to reproduce the SMOKE runs EPA has created previously. To assist users with this effort, we have provided our SMOKE "list" files for you to use in building your own list files. Since these files have hardwired full paths, you should change the file paths in the list files to conform to the directories in which you have installed the inventory files from our zip files. For the 2005 CAP-BAFM platform, a zip file that contains EPA's list files is available on the CHIEF FTP directory that also contains the inventory file for this platform. See: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_listfiles.zip ***************************************************************************** For both the 2005ak_05b and 2005ck_05b cases, users should download and unzip the following files: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_orl_alm.zip ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_orl_can_mex.zip ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_orl_nonpoint.zip ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_orl_nonroad.zip ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_orl_onroad.zip ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_orl_point.zip ***************************************************************************** For the 2005ck_05b case ONLY, users should use the following files for EGU and fire sectors: EGUs: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005_2005v4CAPHAP_ptday_cem_ptip m.zip ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005_2005v4CAPHAP_ptday_noncem_p tipm.zip Fires: Use the "avefire" inventories available from the 2005v4CAPHAP_orl_nonpoint.zip file. ***************************************************************************** For the 2005ak_05b case ONLY, the user should use the following files for the EGU and fire sectors: EGUs (Hourly CEM data and daily data for non-CEM sources in the sector): ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005_2005v4CAPHAP_pthour_ptipm.z ip ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005_2005v4CAPHAP_ptday_noncem_p tipm.zip Fires (day-specific point-source fires): ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/2005emis/2005v4CAPHAP_orl_ptfire.zip E. Version of SMOKE --------------------------------------------------------- To reproduce calculations made by EPA while running the 2005 CAP-BAFM platform, users should use SMOKE version 2.5, which has been tested to ensure backwards compatibility with SMOKE version 2.4. SMOKE version 2.5 documentation is available: http://www.smoke-model.org/version2.5/html F. Other notes on SMOKE-ready inventory files --------------------------------------------------------- In our 2005 based CAP-BAFM platform, we have grouped our SMOKE runs into separate sectors. Most of these sectors are described most completely in the 2002-Based Platform Report: http://www.epa.gov/scram001/reports/Emissions%20TSD%20Vol1_02-28-08.pdf A summary of these sectors is also provided here: IPM sector (ptipm): Point-source facilities that were matched to facilities in the NEEDS 2006 database. For 2005ak_05b, hourly CEM emissions data and daily non-CEM emissions are provided. For regulatory modeling with 2005ck_05b daily CEM and non-CEM data are provided that better represent an average-year approach. Non-IPM sector (ptnonipm): All U.S. point sources not in either the IPM sector nor in the "other point" sector. This sector includes point source fugitive dust emissions and includes the application of the PM transportable fraction. For more information on the PM transport fraction, please see: http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/dustfractions/ U.S. inventory only. Canada and Mexico point emissions can be found in the "other point" (othpt) and "other point Mercury" (othpt_hg) sectors. Average-fire sector (avefire): Average-year wildfire and prescribed burning calculated from 1996-2002 acres burned data, used for the 2005ck_05b base year and all future year modeling. Fire sector (ptfire): Wildfires and prescribed burning fires. This data replaces the avefire sector when performing model performance evaluation (EPA case name 2005ak_05b). Agricultural sector (ag): Year 2002 NH3 emissions from livestock emissions and fertilizer application. Area fugitive dust sector (afdust): Stationary area sources with SCCs in the list at http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/dustfractions/transportfractions052506rev.xls Nonpoint sector (nonpt): Nonpoint (stationary area) sources not in the fire (ptfire or avefire), ag, or afdust sectors. U.S. inventory only. Canada and Mexico nonpoint emissions can be found in the "other area" (othar) and "other area Mercury" (othar_hg) sectors. Aircraft-locomotives-marine minus C3 sector (alm_no_c3): Aircraft, trains, and non-Class 3 Commercial Marine Vessel (CMV) annual nonroad format emissions. (S)ECA C3 sector (seca_c3): Class 3 (large residual fuel main-engine) commercial marine vessel emissions including port and underway in point source high-resolution format (approximately 4km). This is a new sector since the release of the 2002v3 platform documentation. More information on the emission development for this sector can be Found at: http://www.epa.gov/oms/regs/nonroad/marine/ci/420f09015.htm Nonroad sector (nonroad): 2005 Nonroad mobile sources from the NONROAD 2004 model via the National Mobile Inventory Model (NMIM). On-road sector (onroad): 2005 on-road mobile sources from the MOBILE6 model via NMIM (not including refueling emissions). These emissions are from the case name 2005ah_tox_05b because the onroad gasoline emissions used in 2005ck_05b are based on a draft version of MOVES. Other point sector (othpt): U.S. offshore oil, and point emissions from Canada and Mexico. Other point sector (othpt_hg): Mercury point year 2006 emissions from Canada. Other area sector (othar): Stationary nonpoint and nonroad emissions from Canada and Mexico for years 2006 and 1999, respectively. Canada emissions also include aircraft, locomotives, and marine sources. Other area sector (othar_hg): Stationary nonpoint year 2006 mercury emissions from Canada. Other on-road sector (othon): Onroad emissions from Canada and Mexico for years 2006 and 1999, respectively. Biogenic: Hour-specific emissions from the BEIS3.14 model (includes emissions from Canada and Mexico. ############################################################################### ############################################################################### Anthropogenic emissions are contained in 10 zip files with the following SMOKE inventory ASCII files: 2005v2CAPHAP_orl_alm.zip ======================== 2005ck_05b/alm_no_c3/: arinv_lm_no_c3_hap2002v4_20feb2009_v0_orl.txt: Annual 2002 NEI locomotive and gasoline and diesel commercial marine vessel HAP emissions in SMOKE area ORL (nonroad) format. arinv_lm_no_c3_cap2002v3_20feb2009_v0_orl.txt: Annual 2002 NEI locomotive and gasoline and diesel commercial marine vessel CAP emissions in SMOKE area ORL (nonroad) format. 2005ck_05b/seca_c3/: ptinv_seca_c3_caps2005pf4_31jul2008_v0_orl.txt: (S)ECA Class-3 (primarily residual fuel) commercial marine vessel (CAP) emissions. Contains 12 monthly files (where MM is the monthly integer with leading zero and "mon" represents 3-letter monthly abbreviation) of 2005 CEM hour-specific emissions matched to the ORL- formatted IPM annual inventory (ptinv_ptipm_cap2005v2_revised12mar2009_12mar2009_v0_orl.txt) using the CEM ORIS facility and boiler ID fields. Emissions are in standard time (no daylight saving time adjustment). The following inventories are in SMOKE intermediate Net CDF format and are not provided here: seasalt: oceanic sea salt and particulate chlorine emissions ocean_cl2a: oceanic gaseous chlorine emissions hg_volcanic: natural mercury emissions from volcanoes hg_land-direct: natural mercury emissions from land hg_land-recycle: recycled mercury emissions from land hg_ocean-direct: natural mercury emissions from oceans hg_ocean-recycle: recycled mercury emissions from oceans These emissions are quite large in files size and are essentially CMAQ/CAMx- ready and are day-specific and therefore quite large in size. We can provide these emissions via a temporary EPA-provided FTP site if needed. Please contact Rich Mason if you need these data: mason.rich@epa.gov
