23 August 2007 A. Introduction -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This readme file documents the SMOKE data used for the 2002v3CAP platform, also called the CAP-only platform. This platform is associated with EPA's SMOKE case names "2002ac" and "2002cc", additional documentation for which is available in the readme file for the SMOKE scripts: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2002v3CAP/scripts/readme_2002v3_scripts.txt At this time, only the 2002 data associated with this platform are available. EPA is currently running future years that are consistent with this platform for 2009, 2014, 2020, and 2030. The future-year data will be made availabe as regulary actions that rely on these data are published. We ancipate the 2020 and 2030 projections will be released after publication of the Locomotive-Marine final rule, which is currently expected in late December 2007. Therefore, the future-year data are most likely going to be available in January 2008. B. Disclaimer --------------------------------------------------------- This readme file is in progress. It is not intended to be complete documentation for the 2002v3CAP (including EPA 2002ac and 2002cc) case. EPA continues to work on it's CAP modeling platform; therefore, future changes are possible. EPA reserves the right to update these data or create new versions of the CAP platform (or its components) without notice; however, we plan to update this site with current information whenever possible. C. Special Notes --------------------------------------------------------- With the 2002v3CAP platform, we generally have released exactly the dataset that we used for running our cases. In some instances, we have provided a different dataset than the one we actually used, but we expect that the released version will give indentical results. In some cases, the latest available data are not what we used in running the 2002v3CAP platform. This happens because we sometimes find minor corrections or additions that would have had little or no impact on the actual run of the case, but are needed to keep the dataset as up to date as possible. The updated data is what we recommend others use unless there is a need to acrived identical results to the EPA 2002v3CAP platform. The updated ancillary data are available separately from the zip files provided for the platform. The "latest and greatest" ancillary data is available at CHIEF at http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/ancillary.html. These data will be updated regularly as changes are made to EPA's working files. D. Zip files and data files needed for each case ----------------------------------------------------------- As a user, it may be necessary to know how to group the inventory files in SMOKE input "list" files used by the Smkinven program for the 2002ac and 2002cc cases. This is particularly important for users who want to reproduce the SMOKE runs EPA has created previously. To assist users with this effort, we have provided our SMOKE "list" files for you to use in building your own list files. Since these files have hardwired full paths, you should change the file paths in the list files to conform to the directories in which you have installed the inventory files from our zip files. For the CAP platform, a zip file that contains EPA's list files is available on the CHIEF FTP directory that also contains the inventory file for this platform. See: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2002v3CAP/2002emis/2002_neiv3CAP_listfiles.zip To run the 2002ac and 2002cc cases, you should download and unzip all of the .zip files located in: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2002v3CAP/2002emis/ If you wish to run the 2002cc case only, you need to run the 2002ac case for all sectors except for the ptfire and nonptfire sectors, and run the 2002cc avefire sector in place of those. For more information on sectors and scripts to use for 2002ac and 2002cc, refer to the scripts readme file listed in section A. E. Version of SMOKE --------------------------------------------------------- To reproduce calculations made by EPA while running the 2002-based platform, users should use SMOKE version 2.3.4. The version of SMOKE that EPA used in the processing was slightly different than SMOKE 2.3.4 because many of the updates that we incorporated into SKOKE 2.3 through SMOKE 2.3.4 were created to support processing of the 2002 NEI and associated new approaches. The only expected discrepancy in data produced from SMOKE between what EPA used and SMOKE v2.3.4 is in the stack parameters. This difference will show up in any reports including stack parameters, but it has no impact on the plume rise calculation, and therefore will not show up as a difference in the CMAQ-ready inputs. F. Other notes on SMOKE-ready inventory files --------------------------------------------------------- In our 2002v3CAP platform, we have grouped our SMOKE runs into separate sectors. These sectors will be described most completely in the 2002-Based Platform Report (not available as of 8/23/07). This report will be the documentation we ancipate posting on the EMCH home page. In addition, the readme file on the 2002v3CAP platform SMOKE scripts contains a list of these sectors. The link to these scripts and the readme file can be found on the EMCH homepage. Note also that the point source dataset "ptinv_ptnonipm_noxpf_cap2002nei_28Feb2007_orl.txt" is not a direct input file to any of our cases. We used this dataset as an input to apply the transportable fractions to the point source fugitive dust SCCs. Therefore, this dataset is the ptnonipm sector's input file PRIOR to application of the transportable fractions. Users need this dataset only if they prefer to apply their own transportable fractions and not the county-specific ones available as of May 2006 at: http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/invent/index.html#dust. If users prefer to use the same file as EPA with the transportable fractions already applied, they should use the file named: ptinv_ptnonipm_xportfrac_cap2002nei_09mar2007_v0_orl.txt For most sectors, the inventory formats used in this platform is an extended ORL format. This format cannot be read by versions of SMOKE prior to version 2.3.2 (or in some cases, version 2.3). We recommend users use SMOKE version 2.3.4 or later to process the inventory files provided with this platform. Users who attempt to use SMOKE prior to version 2.3.2 will need to delete the extra columns from these datasets to conform to the previous (not extended) ORL formats.
