16 May 2011 A. Introduction -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This readme file documents the SMOKE data used for EPA's Version 4.2, 2005-based Platform (2005v4.2) and including future year cases developed from it. This platform supported the Final Transport Rule modeling. Data files are included to support the following EPA emission cases: 2005 base case: 2005cs_05b future year cases: 2012cs_05b, 2014cs_05b, 2014cs_tr1remedy_05b (which uses 2014cs_05b) future year tagging cases (which use 2012cs_05b): 2012cs_o3tag_05b, 2012cs_pmtag_05b For more information on these cases, please refer to the readme file for the scripts. The 2005v4.2 platform is an update of the 2005v4.1 platform (http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/index.html#2005), based on the 2005v2 National Emissions Inventory (NEI). It is also called the 2005 CAP-BAFM (criteria air pollutants-benzene, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and methanol) platform, V4.2. We used a chemical mechanism that utilizes only "BAFM" VOC HAPs: Benzene, Acetaldehyde, Formaldehyde, and Methanol (CAS numbers 71432, 75070, 50000, and 67561 respectively). We also process mercury, hydrogen chloride (HCL) and chlorine (CL2) emissions. Therefore, some inventories contained within only contain those pollutants rather than all HAPs. This platform supports the type of 2005 run that is used as the 2005 baseline for evaluation of future-year control strategies, the results from which are used in calculations of relative response factors (RRFs) during air quality modeling results analysis. The projected future year data provided with this platform is generally representative of several years around 2012 and 2014 such as 2015. SMOKE scripts are also being provided. There is a separate README for the scripts. There is also a separate README for the SMOKE ancillary files. Inventory data data is provided for each year that was modeled. B. Disclaimer --------------------------------------------------------- EPA has not processed a full multipollutant (i.e., with all CMAQ-supported HAPs, also called CAP- HAP) case for 2005, so the latest available CAP-HAP case remains 2002v3 (see http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/index.html#2002). Unlike for the 2005v4 platform, all of the HAP inventory data are NOT provided in these files. EPA continues to work on its CAP-HAP modeling platform; therefore, future changes are possible. EPA reserves the right to create new versions of the CAP-HAP platform (or its components) without notice; however, we plan to update this site with current information whenever possible. C. Special Notes --------------------------------------------------------- Several emissions modeling sectors are unchanged from older cases, such as 2005ck_05b, 2005ah_tox_05b, and 2005cr_05b, and so that is where they appear in the inventory directory structures and example SMOKE input "list" files. In addition, some of ancillary files provided with this platform (e.g., the speciation cross-reference files) are year-specific. Additional files, both inventories and ancillary files such as speciation cross-references, are provided now for 2012 and 2014, and potentially other years at a later date. The EPA CHIEF website is the main web site used for accessing SMOKE-ready inventories and associated inputs: http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/ The emission inventories and SMOKE list files are provided in the following directories: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4_2/2005emis/ (base year) ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4_2/2012emis/ (future year 2012, including tagging) ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4_2/2014emis/ (future year 2014, including tr1remedy) The ancillary data (for which there is a separate README) is available at: ftp://ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4_2/ancillary_smoke/ D. Version of SMOKE --------------------------------------------------------- To reproduce calculations made by EPA while running the 2005 CAP-BAFM platform, users should use SMOKE version 2.6. The version of SMOKE we used is included in the scripts directory. SMOKE version 2.6 documentation is available: http://www.smoke-model.org/version2.6/html F. Other notes on SMOKE-ready inventory files --------------------------------------------------------- In our 2005v4.2 based CAP-BAFM platform, we have grouped our SMOKE runs into separate sectors. These sectors are described most completely in the Technical Support Document: Preparation of Emissions Inventories for the Version 4.2, 2005-based Platform, which is posted at http://www.epa.gov/ttn/chief/emch/index.html#2005 ############################################################################### The details on the inventory files for each year modeled are documented in their respective readme files: 2005emis/readme_2005v4_2_CAP_BAFM_HAPs_inventories_2005_inputs.txt 2012emis/readme_2005v4_2_CAP_BAFM_HAPs_inventories_2012_inputs.txt 2014emis/readme_2005v4_2_CAP_BAFM_HAPs_inventories_2014_inputs.txt The ancillary SMOKE input files are documented in the following readme: readme_2005v4_2_CAP_BAFM_HAPs_ancillary_inputs.txt The following inventories are in SMOKE intermediate Net CDF format: seasalt: oceanic sea salt and particulate chlorine emissions ocean_cl2a: oceanic gaseous chlorine emissions These files are essentially CMAQ/CAMx-ready and are day-specific. They can be found here: ftp.epa.gov/EmisInventory/2005v4/mercury_cl2_seasalt/
