Last update: 24 May 2024 This package contains SMOKE inputs - specifically, inventories and ancillary files - and sample run scripts relevant to the 2021 emissions modeling platform and the 2021hb_cb6_21k emissions case. Portable run scripts for running SMOKE are not part of this package at this time; instead, EPA's raw run scripts are included. In terms of the sector organization and processing flow, this case closely follows the 2020 emissions modeling platform posted here: https://gaftp.epa.gov/air/emismod/2020/ == Inventory files == Inventories for the 2021hb case are included in the following files: 2021emissions/canmex_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Monthly and annual inventories for all Canada and Mexico sectors except CMV and fires. 2021emissions/cem_pthour_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Hourly CEMs emissions for the ptegu sector, using the new FF10 Hourly format. 2021emissions/cmv_c1c2_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Annual and hourly inventories for the cmv_c1c2 sector, 12US1 domain. 2021emissions/cmv_c3_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Annual and hourly inventories for the cmv_c3 sector, 12US1 domain. 2021emissions/fires_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Annual and daily inventories for the ptagfire, ptfire-rx, ptfire-wild, and ptfire_othna sectors. 2021emissions/nonpoint_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Annual (and in the case of livestock, monthly) inventories for the afdust, livestock, nonpt, np_oilgas, np_solvents, rail, and rwc sectors. Fertilizer sector emissions are not available at this time, and are not needed for CMAQ modeling because CMAQ is run with the bidirectional NH3 option. Fertilizer emissions can be generated from CMAQ output and are not yet available. 2021emissions/nonroad_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Monthly inventories for the nonroad sector. 2021emissions/onroad_activity_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Monthly and annual activity data for running SMOKE-MOVES for the onroad and onroad_ca_adj sectors. 2021emissions/onroad_emissions_SMOKE-MOVES_FF10_2021hb_26mar2024.zip - Monthly onroad inventory generated from SMOKE-MOVES output. Includes additional pollutants needed for CMAQ multipollutant (toxics, or HAP-CAP) modeling. 2021emissions/point_inventory_2021hb_24may2024.zip - Annual inventories for the airports, ptnonipm, pt_oilgas, and ptegu sectors. Two sets of SMOKE-MOVES emission factor tables are available: one for regular CMAQ modeling (2021emissions/moves_eftables_caps/), and one for multipollutant / HAP-CAP modeling (2021emissions/moves_eftables_hapcap/). If these files are needed and are not posted on FTP at this time, please contact EPA. == Sample run scripts == The zip 2021hb_SMOKE_scripts_unedited_22may2024.zip contains the raw run scripts used by EPA to process the emissions through SMOKE for all sectors. These scripts can be used to determine which inputs and settings to use for which sectors, with some exceptions as described in the next section. SMOKE v5.0 was used. == Ancillary files == Ancillary files for the 2021hb case are included in the following files: ancillary_data/2021hb/beis4_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip ancillary_data/2021hb/gridding_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip ancillary_data/2021hb/onroad_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip ancillary_data/2021hb/other_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip ancillary_data/2021hb/speciation_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip ancillary_data/2021hb/temporal_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip ancillary_data/2021hb/ocean_chlorine.zip The sample run scripts can be used to determine which inputs and settings to use for which sectors, with some exceptions. The filenames referenced by the sample run scripts do not always match the filenames in this package exactly, since ancillary files are updated many times as the platform is developed. The important parts of the filenames to note are the prefix and the version number at the end, NOT the date. For example, some scripts reference sccdesc_2021platform_14mar2024_nf_v1.txt, but the package only contains sccdesc_2021platform_24may2024_nf_v1.txt, which is a newer version of the 14mar2024 file. Since SMOKE processing was performed for HAP-CAP modeling, the sample run scripts reflect the SMOKE inputs needed for HAP-CAP. Different inputs are included in this package for CAP-focused modeling, as described below. The sample run scripts reference component GSPROs and GSREFs (e.g. GSPROTMP_A, _B, _C, and so on), but this package includes full GSPROs and GSREFs. So, please use the following files for the GSPROs and GSREFs: - GSPROs for HAP-CAP processing (speciation_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip, ge_dat/speciation/gspro_hapcap/ directory): Most Canada and Mexico sectors (canada_*, canmex_*, and ptfire_othna) use the "criteria" GSPRO. The mexico_onroad sector has its own GSPRO. The CMV sectors (c1c2 and c3), nonroad, and beis4 each have their own GSPRO. SMOKE-MOVES (onroad / onroad_ca_adj) uses gspro_CB6R3_AE7_MOVES_custom_speciation_ROC_Spec_5_3_20230911_17nov2023_nf_v1.txt. All other sectors use gspro_cmaq_cb6ae7_2021hb_cb6_21k_nf.txt. - GSPROs for CAP-focused processing (speciation_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip, ge_dat/speciation/gspro_caps/ directory): beis: Use the same GSPRO as HAP-CAP (ge_dat/speciation/gspro_hapcap/gspro_beis4_cmaq_cb6ae7_2021hb_cb6_21k_nf.txt) cmv_c1c2/c3: gspro_cmv_cmaq_cb6ae7_2022hc_cb6_22m_nf.txt mexico_onroad: gspro_mexico_onroad_cmaq_cb6ae7_2018gg_18j_08nov2021.txt nonroad: gspro_nonroad_cmaq_cb6ae7_2022hc_cb6_22m_01nov2023.txt onroad/onroad_ca_adj: gspro_CB6R3_AE7_MOVES_custom_speciation_ROC_Spec_5_3_20230911_01mar2024_nf_v2.txt All other sectors: gspro_criteria_cmaq_cb6ae7_2021hb_cb6_21k_01nov2023.txt - GSREFs: Several sectors have their own sector-specific GSREFs, including ptegu, canmex_point, and mexico_onroad. Nonroad and rail use gsref_nonroad_rail_cmaq_cb6ae7_2021hb_cb6_21k_nf.txt. Livestock, fertilizer, canmex_ag, and canmex_area use gsref_ag_cmaq_cb6ae7_2021hb_cb6_21k_nf.txt. SMOKE-MOVES (onroad / onroad_ca_adj) has month-specific GSREFs for starts (RPS), and seasonal GSREFs for all other rates. The same GSREFs can be used for both CAP-focused and HAP-CAP modeling. The INVTABLEs referenced in the sample run scripts are located in speciation_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip, ge_dat/speciation/invtable_hapcap/ subdirectory. These INVTABLEs are for HAP-CAP modeling. For CAP-focused modeling, use the INVTABLEs in the ge_dat/speciation/invtable_caps/ subdirectory as follows: Use invtable_2014platform_nointegrate_01may2019_v2.txt for all of the sectors which already use it in HAP-CAP processing, plus airports, ptegu, ptnonipm, and pt_oilgas. For nonroad, use invtable_2014platform_MOVES_nonroad_19feb2020_v2.txt For onroad/onroad_ca_adj, use invtable_MOVES2014_custom_speciation_24apr2023_v5.txt For mexico_onroad, use invtable_for_MOVES_Mexico_10may2017_v3.txt For all other sectors, use invtable_2014platform_integrate_21dec2018_v3.txt Two sets of MEPROCs are included in onroad_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip, one set for HAP-CAP modeling (ge_dat/onroad/meproc_hapcap/) and one set for CAP-focused modeling (ge_dat/onroad/meproc_caps/). The sample run scripts reference the HAP-CAP MEPROCs. It is a straightforward one-to-one swap to go from the HAP-CAP MEPROCs to the CAP-focused MEPROCs. The MRCLIST files included in onroad_ge_dat_2021hb_24may2024.zip are for HAP-CAP modeling. The EF tables for CAP-focused modeling have different filenames, and therefore different MRCLISTs must be used. CAP-focused MRCLISTs are not included in this package and must be generated manually for those looking to run SMOKE-MOVES this way. To convert the MRCLISTs from HAP-CAP to CAP-focused, replace "nata" with "aq_cb6_saprc" in each filename. == Spatial surrogates == Spatial surrogates for the US and Canada/Mexico, respectively, are included in these zips: spatial_surrogates/2021hb/CONUS12_2021hb_surrogates_25may2023_plus_2021_oilgas.zip spatial_surrogates/2021hb/CANMEX12_2020NEI_surrogates_23mar2023.zip For 4km or nonCONUS surrogates, you can use the surrogates from the 2020 package: https://gaftp.epa.gov/air/emismod/2020/spatial_surrogates/ Note that 2021-specific oil and gas spatial surrogates are not currently available for modeling domains other than 12km.
