28.1 Sector Descriptions and Overview
Residential wood combustion (RWC) appliances, such as wood-burning fireplaces, woodstoves, and wood-burning hydronic heaters, are significant sources of air pollution in the United States—especially during winter months. The appliances create heat or ambience by combusting wood, firelogs or wood pellets. RWC emits large amounts of fine particulate matter (PM25-PRI), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) that are known to contribute to poor human health, air quality, and visibility.
All active SCCs for the RWC sector are provided in Table 28.1; the last column indicates the SCCs that EPA estimates (as “X”). The SCC level 1 and 2 descriptions are “Stationary Source Fuel Combustion; Residential” for all SCCs.
